Sensor Installation
1-Wire Outdoor Temperature/Humidity Sensor Kit

Refer to the layout diagram for clarification of parts placement. All references to up, down, left, and right assume that you are looking at the PCB with the silkscreen TAPR logo on the right-hand side of the board. Unless noted otherwise, all components are mounted on the top of the PC board.


Temperature Sensor

The sensor looks like a transistor. Be sure to the orient the device so that the flat side of the body lines up with the silk-screen layout (faces the RJ11 jacks).

Two temperature sensors have been supplied with the kit. Only one is needed for normal operation. The second sensor is for experimentation with the wet/dry bulb measurement of relative humidity. Currently, there is no software support for this option. Unless you personally have plans for developing software and/or experimenting with 1-Wire® devices, do not install the second sensor. Keep the second sensor in case the installed sensor develops a problem (e.g., lightning damage)

  Install a DS18S20 temperature sensor at U1.
  Solder all three leads and clip the excess length.

Again, installtion of the second sensor is only if you intend to do software development. If you haven't already read the above paragraph, do so now.

  Solder all three leads and clip the excess length.

Clean the PC Board

Note: This step must be done prior to installing the humidity sensor to be sure the sensor is not damaged by the solvent.

  Clean the PC board with Isopropol alcohol

Humidity Sensor

U2, the HIH-3610-001 humidity sensor faces the RJ11 jacks. A recessed area identifies the front of the sensor with the actual sensor in the lower RH corner. The bottom of the recessed area appears to have an epoxy that has been applied to hold the sensor in place. Be sure you have correctly identified the front before soldering. To facillitate identifying the front of the sensor download the product spec from Honeywell here.  Strongly recommended!

Procedure
  Remove the HIH-3610-001 from the anti-static carrier and insert in the board with the front facing the RJ11 jacks at U2. Note that the leads are already formed correctly. Guide the leads through the mounting holes. Do not stress the leads by trying to pull the sensor down more than the formed leads allow.
  Double-check alignment of the sensor. If installed backwards, reverse polority will likely destroy the device, even if power is applied only for a moment.
  Solder all three leads and clip the excess length on the bottom of the board.
