I did a quick Google search for "OnStar Technology" and found this article: http://www.edmunds.com/news/innovations/articles/43031/article.html which gives a basic overview of how it works. It mentions that they use Satellite an cellular communications. The Technology & Hardware FAQ page at onstar.com (http://onstar.com/us_english/jsp/faq/not_faq_main.jsp?topPage=not_faq_techhardware.jsp&id=5&title=Technology+%26amp%3B+Hardware) gives some more details.
