Yes it is plain but I got to agree, it is easier on the eyes and easier to
read the information in poor conditions (ie: Driving at the same time and
reading out of the corner of your eye!<grin>).

That is chosen as one of the most eye-friendly colors for backgrounds, not
to be
pretty. Many blues, for example, cause problems with some forms of
color-blindness.
