[aprssig] D700 owners question

I'm looking at the D700 to use for a small emergency group. Does the radio 
by itself offer enough standard packet abilities to make the combination of 
tnc and separate radio not worth it? In other words what are the strengths 
and weaknesses of the D700 running solo? The expected usage mode is 
listening to vhf voice on one side while monitoring the packet vhf side 
with a laptop.
