Ron, there are two Earthmates. The old one, the new one. If you look at the Delorme web pages, the new one is the smaller one that is currently still being sold. It has replacable cables. It is only sold with a USB cable, but Delorme also sells a serial+12Vpower cable for another $40. The unit itself can work either way--but needs their proprietary cable. Or, you can modify the USB cable it is sold with, since that has all the necessary connections in it if you are comfortable with hacking the cable connector. The pinouts are available online, I think in the Tinytrak group on yahoo. The new Earthmate (often called Earthmate2 by us heathens) sends NMEA and works very nicely as a standard GPS. The older Earthmate is a totally different device.
