Greetings Fred from Greenville, SC.  The Kantronics KPC-3+  is a good choice 
for a digi but it is rather expensive.  A less expensive alternative is a 
TNC-X with the TNC daughter board.  www.tnc-x.com   .   The nearest digi to 
you is probably on Rich Mtn near Brevard.  The call is KE4CJA-4.  It is 34.4 
miles at 112 degrees.  I realize in your area there might not be a path to 
it.  I see someone has put a object on the map called Sylva-NC.  If I can
