Something that's not a PC. PICs, single-board computers, and so on. Usually something without a full platform OS like Linux or Windows. For Digi_Ned, this is an important step to make it usable on small devices like the Linksys WRT54GS wireless router, or the ARM7-based TNC I'm working on. I know you've done work with PICs, and you've probably done programming on a PC, too, so you can appreciate the differences. You've got much less processing power and memory to deal with, little if any memory management, and often no file system. Fortunately Digi_Ned looks to be pretty cleanly written, and it's in C - probably the easiest language to port between devices. Except for Java - haven't done any embedded Java myself, but we've got a couple of Java zealots here and I know I'm going to hear about if I don't mention it now. =] Scott N1VG -----Original Message----- From: aprssig-bounces at lists.tapr.org [mailto:aprssig-bounces at lists.tapr.org]On Behalf Of Andrew Rich Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2005 9:37 PM To: TAPR APRS Mailing List Subject: RE: [aprssig] DIGI_NED 0.3.5 for embedded systems What is an embedded system ? -----Original Message----- From: hasan schiers [mailto:schiers at netins.net] Sent: Sunday, 27 February 2005 08:34 To: TAPR APRS Mailing List Subject: Re: [aprssig] DIGI_NED 0.3.5 for embedded systems Thanks info, Henk. It would be most useful if it were added, as it gives nice cross OS capabilities and AGWPE is a wonder to behold...I've used it for years as a TNC manager (I'm not interested in sound card tnc's), and it does a wonderful job of it. I was able to reprogram our local ui-digi firmware based digi box from my wireless laptop this morning using agwTerminalTCP....the laptop running it went wireless to my AGWPE PRO core running on an XP machine in the basement and the two tnc's connected to it are seen as local to the laptop. Quite amazing. Xastir uses those same two tnc's, as does UI-View32, UISS and several other programs, even remotely. The ability to use digi_ned, the mother of all digi-peating programs, on the Xastir machine using the AGWPE hooks would be a real asset for us. Thanks for at least considering it...it will help us further improve the network. 73, ...hasan, N0AN ----- Original Message ----- From: "Henk de Groot" <henk.de.groot at hetnet.nl> To: "TAPR APRS Mailing List" <aprssig at lists.tapr.org> Sent: Saturday, February 26, 2005 4:25 PM Subject: Re: [aprssig] DIGI_NED 0.3.5 for embedded systems > Hello Hasan, > > hasan schiers schreef: >> Forget the first question...can I use the standard linux based digi_net >> side by side with Xastir on the same machine, if the Xastir machine is >> connected to my TNC's using the network facility to AGWPE PRO? >> >> That's the question...I don't need the stripped down version...I already >> have support for all the AX.25 stuff. > > I don't know if somebody already invented fome glue to connect AGWPE to > the Kernel AX.25 interface (kind of "kissattach" for AGWPE), if not, then > it is currently not possible since DIGI_NED only talks to the AX.25 > support in the kernel. > > I'm thinking about adding the possibility to talk to AGWPE, that would > enable your setup and also enable running DIGI_NED on Cygwin together with > other AGWPE clients. > > I think I have to steal some XASTIR code to do this.
