As I said ImageMagick will do the same thing, and by the way, runs on  
Mac and Linux.

Anyway, it turns out that the gifs work fine, though the docs seem to  
imply PNGs should be used. I've also found that setting the shadow  
size to 1 pixel makes it invisible, so that will not be a problem  
either.
