I've thought about doing the same thing, but couldn't think of a simple way to create an appropriate reflective surface. Generating power would really be a secondary concern - I'm sure I could have fun focusing > 7 kW of energy on ANYTHING. =] Here's some reading for you, complete with HTML-converted ASCII art. http://www.redrok.com/engine.htm Scott N1VG ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robert Bruninga" <bruninga at usna.edu> To: <tyler at allisonhouse.com>; <aprssig at lists.tapr.org>; <brianbr at mac.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2005 9:52 AM Subject: Re: [aprssig] Special GPS In response to the solar power tracking post: I was wondering about using one of many 10 foot tracking dishes in my backyard to track the sun and focus an aluminum reflective dish onto a boiler at the feed. Then run a steam turbine to generate power: * about 7000W solar energy * with 30% conversion efficiency, about 2kw could be available? * Are there any off-the-shelf hobbiest steam turbines? These 10' dishes with just one motor can easily track the sun. Only once a week or so, you would need to use a wrench to re-adjust the declination for the seasonal variation of the ecliptic.
