The spec sheet says 5 are built in.  There is what appears to be a 40 
pin header labeled "Five serial ports".

I agree, with your assessment of good and bad points.  I'm looking for 
someone around here at work who can use one so I can check it out.  I 
suggested it for a balloon flight computer, but the idea wasn't well 
received.
