Assuming this refers to the Alinco DR-135 with
built-in TNC, I'd be curious about the details of
this opinion.   I was under the impression that
these (or just about any TNC) works just fine
with APRS and any IGate.

True, it wont make for a good connected-mode 
packet node for bulk file transfer due to is MAX-1 
parameter but that does not impact APRS or 
IGates in any way, unless I am missing something.
