Keith,

Here is the info that APRS operators in the New Orleans
area should have:

The main W5UK-9 digi is stiill operating in Downtown
New Orleans at 600 feet and covers 5000 sq mi, but 
it only provides one-hop digipeats only.  Problem is, 
the nearest IGates are at  least 2 hops away, thus,
nothing is getting out of that area from this excellent 
digi.  There are 2 work-arounds:

1) Get an IGate to hear the W5UK-9 direct by 
pointing  a beam at it...  This should be possible
from 60 to 80 miles or more away.

2) OR: Users set the path VIA WIDE2-1,WIDE2-1 
until #1 is done.  This path will work anywhere...

3) Notice that paths beginning with WIDE1-1 will
not work through this digi.  It only supports
(with one hop repeat) these paths
WIDE2-2 or WIDE2-1 or WIDE3-3 or WIDE3-2,
does callsign substitution and the packets die.

This just in...

The Salvation Army in Mississippi is requesting ARES provide two 2-
person, self-contained, teams with HF capability. APRS is also
desired. These teams should be prepared with generator if
possible. Food and water is expected to be available in the
operational area along the MS coast. The task is to provide
communications among the Salvation Army teams operating there and
their division headquarters in Jackson MS, as well as outgoing H&W.
A short orientation session in Jackson is required prior to
deployment.

The request is from the Salvation Army, and was communicated through
Ron Brown AB5WF, ARES DEC in Jackson MS.
