The main states would probably be:
Eastern Colorado
Northern Texas
OK, KS, NE, SD, MN, IA, MO, WI, IL

If you think it's worth it what path should we use for maximum chance of
coverage?

APRS coverage in Colorado dies about 50 to 60 miles East of the front range
of the Rocky Mountains and there is a great APRS wasteland until you reach
Kansas.  Kansas is pretty good with state wide APRS repeater systems.
Western Nebraska is very sparse with APRS only around the larger cities.
