I understand there are some embedded host controller chips showing up, but so far I've only seen them used for mass storage devices. I really need to write a FAQ on this, since I keep explaining it to people asking if I'm going to make a tracker that uses USB GPS receivers. Even if you've got a host controller, you're only half way there - you have to know how to talk to the device. Magellan uses a mass storage device, Garmin is proprietary, and even if it's plain NMEA you can't be sure what endpoint type it's going to use. It's not impossible, but it'd be a major pain.
