So explain what isn't "free" about WinLink? And why is it overhyped? I think it's about as free as it can get, except maybe If you consider the cost of a Pactor-3 modem, which isn't Nearly as expensive as a nice HF rig. Using Packet, even Miserly Hams can access Winlink via Telpac using existing Packet modems and VHF radios. You do NOT need Pactor-3 To access it, many older packet modems include Pactor-1 Which works fine most times. I think it isn't hyp'ed enough! It's a great system. It serves the Amateur community daily, 24/7, Not just putting blips on maps for the amusement of Of Ham's wife wondering where her husband is. And a Linux flavor is surely welcomed now! So just what is PSKMail? If it doesn't have the Infrastructure of WinLink it will never be much use. I can't download a 411MB file to find out. that's worse Than buying a Pactor-3 modem! -----Original Message----- From: aprssig-bounces at lists.tapr.org [mailto:aprssig-bounces at lists.tapr.org] On Behalf Of Stephen Brown Jr Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 20:43 To: TAPR APRS Mailing List Subject: Re: [aprssig] PSKMail Live CD This is pretty neat, I didn't even know something like this existed, and being a linux program makes it all more the better for me! :D I'm definitely going to look into this, I would love to see a free alternative to the overhyped Winlink system. Thanks for sharing! 73's Stephen N1VLV On 12/19/06, Brian B. Fortunately, for the misfortunate there is a Live Boot CD available from SM0RWO at <http://www.crusefalk.se/psklive/> It is a 411 MB download as an ISO file ready to be burned. I have booted it up on two different Intel based machines here and it runs very nicely. The disk was hard to get as the first few days after QST hit homes, the website got hammered pretty hard, It took me 12 hours to pull the file! If you do not have access to broadband or don't want the hassle I have made it available at Ye Olde Disk Shoppe for the usual fee of $3.50 ( covering, label, media, copying, mailer, Paypal and postage) <http://www.wulfden.org/DiskShop.shtml> --- cheers ... 73 de brian riley, n1bq , underhill center, vermont < <http://web.mac.com/brianbr/> http://web.mac.com/brianbr/> Tech Blog <http://www.wulfden.org/DiskShop.shtml> Home of the K107 Serial LCD Controller Kit FT817 Power Conditioner Kit Tab Robot Laser Tag Kit MSP430 Chips and Connectors Propeller Robot Controller SX48 "Tech Board" Kit _______________________________________________ aprssig mailing list aprssig at lists.tapr.org https://lists.tapr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/aprssig -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
