I mean preserving the rightmost characters.  WB4APR-9 becomes B4APR9.  Not
pretty, but oh well...

I suppose you could also truncate the other way, but preserve the SSID.  So
you'd get WB4AP9.  I'm not sure that's really an improvement, though.
