And in fact I could put together such a device (without a mapping display, anyway) in prototype form, but it wouldn't be pretty. Or legal to sell. Just getting FCC certification would require thousands of dollars. Manufacturing setup for just the body of the radio likely be in the tens of thousands. You've got multiple pieces to get injection molded, maybe $3000 for a custom keypad, thousands more for a custom LCD. The pioneering spirit isn't gone.. it just takes a lot more resources to produce an economically viable product these days. Scott N1VG
