Around here, many digis will allow such packets to go into APRS-IS (because they'll transmit the packet once with no more path, and an IGate still hears the digi DIRECT), but they won't operate WIDE3-3 (or higher) as the user intended. That's a good thing. West of the Rockies at least, two hops is routinely enough and more is not nice. It needn't be complicated. WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 while mobile, plain WIDE2-2 from home or BASE.
