I just bought one of your GPS units, I will make a converter that will take
12V down to 5V this is really simple to make. I will let you know what my
result is once I get the unit in hand.

You'll need a 5-volt power source.  Still working on a good option for the
D700.  But provide power and the proper connector, and yeah, they'll work
fine.
