For the D700, from a cold boot, manual configuratin is trivial.  Just set these parameters:

MYCALL to your call
GPS INPUT to NMEA
TRANSMIT MODE AUTO
TRANSMIT RATE to 1 minute (on a long trip)
PATH to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1
Front panel BCON toggled ON

That should do it I think.  Then later set
RADIO MENU DISPLAY MODE to MODE 3 (I think)
