Because I have a dream of someday using the APRS network's IGates and Iservers as a "WAN" connection for very remote PropNET stations w/o Internet capabilities. Using 3rd party protocols makes sense as it allows experimentation on the existing network without breaking anything -- a very well thought-out strategy.
