This would not surprise me if the digi is not properly adjusted or has distortion, overdrive of the TNC, too much demphasis, or any of the many kinds of audio response problems that many people ignore when they hook packet to a radio.

Glad to hear you have found out why y our packets are having problems.  Now the thing to do is to work with the digi operator and see if he can make some adjustments at the digi audio path to clean this up maybe
