Use a different version of the Motif library.  There are bugs in both Lesstif
and the most recent OpenMotif that do this.  There is quite a bit of discussion
in the archives of the xastir mailing list, which you can search on google
using the string:
  site:http://lists.xastir.org/pipermail/xastir motif slider

It's a pity the xastir mailing lists are down again, but the archive
isn't.
