Normally I'd suggest asking on the Xastir list (you'd get more and
faster responses to such questions), but seeing as it's down at the
moment that wouldn't make a lot of sense!
Start Xastir from a shell. Xterm, rxvt, whatever MacOSX provides
that gives you a command line. Start it like this:
xastir &
or like I do (starts it at the bottom-right corner):
xastir -geometry -0-0 &
Any errors/warnings that get written to STDERR (Standard Error
output) will then appear in the shell. Don't exit that shell or you
won't see the messages.
If you're getting errors while opening the serial port they should
show up there.
If you want to see more of what Xastir is doing (lots of debug
output), you can start it this way:
xastir -v 4095 &
That will turn on all the debug bits which cause many print
functions to dump stuff out.
