My VERY limited experience with D-STAR was a visit to a friend in Palm Springs, CA. Having heard the reports of muddy and garbled audio, I was amazed at how well the local D-STAR machine sounded. After a couple of interesting QSOs, we did a quick A-B test with the main analog machine. There was little if any difference in the audio. Now this was in an area where everybody had strong signals, but at least under those circumstances D-STAR was at least as good as analog. I live in a D-STAR desert, no local experience, except that the local 911 center uses some dedicated digital D-STAR links as ultimate backups. Alan WA4SCA
