Talk to the TNC as in receive and send packets?

Kenwood reps (two of them) told me that this was not possible.  I
realize sales reps don't always know the whole story, so if you've
actually done this I'd appreciate some confirmation and clarification
of what can actually be done with the TNC while the control head is in
APRS mode.
