In very sparse areas, the maintenance of a 1 minute rate with voice alert improves your probability of detecting someone else in the great expanse of wilderness... Even it you are not hitting any digis... Oh, and that is the advantage of proportional pathing in the D710... It maintains a 1 minute rate, but only every other packet goes via 1 hop and only every forth packet goes via 2. So for voice-alert proximity detection, you still have a 1 minute local rate, but your immediate local digi only sees a 2 min rate, and the 2 hop area only sees a 4 minute rate... Bob
