Guys, Just catching up on the backlog of mails here since Christmas J As mentioned, the warnings you are seeing originate from WXSVR-AU, which is the Aussie version of your WXSVR. The reason we use NWS- prefixes is to avoid the need to develop new plugins for UI-VIEW, Xastir and any other application that handles the weather warnings - why re-invent the wheel? The CWA prefixes used down here are carefully selected so as not to overlap anything used by the NWS over there, so that you see what you see - warnings down under exist in the stream but do not trigger on your displays. We received input and advice from the guys looking after your WXSVR whilst we were developing ours, so we made sure that these checks were in place so as not to step on the US feeds and raise false warnings. If you want to read more about the WXSVR-AU setup, you can check http://wxsvr.aprs.net.au All our CWA and PID codes are listed here - you can even grab our shapefiles and set them up to see what's going on if you like J (BEWARE that you can have EITHER the Aust files or the NWS files - NOT BOTH) All the best for the new year Geoff VK2XJG From: aprssig-bounces at tapr.org [mailto:aprssig-bounces at tapr.org] On Behalf Of Ray Wells Sent: Tuesday, December 22, 2009 9:26 AM To: TAPR APRS Mailing List Subject: Re: [aprssig] Weather ? I don't recall the details now, but when the idea of weather warnings for Australia was first suggested, Geoff Gatward (vk2xjg) negotiated with someone in the US. One requirement was, as I recall, that we didn't duplicate any US zone/county names. Accordingly the state of Western Australia (WA) became WX to avoid conflict with Washington State. If Geoff is across this list he may care to comment/correct me. Ray vk2tv Bill Diaz wrote: Guys, The 24 current watch, warning and advisory messages on the APRS-IS are from Australia. These include Cyclone warnings, which we do not see from NWS. The Australian server is using NWS-ADVIS, NWS-WATCH, and NWS-WARN even though NWS has nothing to do with these products. The originating call sign as seen on APRS-IS not using NWS WFO designators, but designators for Australian weather offices AFAIK. Furthermore, the zones or counties in these messages do not correspond to any of the zones or counties in the US. I can assure you NWS has not stopped putting out alerts. The current APRS-IS weather server no longer sends Watches and Advisories, only warnings. A filter setting of t/n on port 14580 will provide whatever is available on the APRS-IS, Australian or US. There are currently no US NWS warnings available as far as I can tell. Nothing will display on your US map. On Sun, Dec 20, 2009 at 08:20:59PM -0500, we recorded a bogon-computron collision of the <mailto:mckeehan at mckeehan.homeip.net> <mckeehan at mckeehan.homeip.net> flavor, containing: What's the latest with the weather information via APRS? I've not been seeing watches in my local area for a little while now and wonder if I've missed some setting change. I've got my home station receiving a full feed of WX alerts (that is, I have a "t/n" in my filter string) and am receiving tons of WX alerts --- but none in my local area, even when major news organizations report severe weather alerts active from NWS. My guess is that some NWS offices have stopped putting their alerts out to whatever feeds APRS-IS. Hope that's wrong and there's another setting I can tweak to start seeing them again. -- Tom Russo KM5VY SAR502 DM64ux http://www.swcp.com/~russo/ Tijeras, NM QRPL#1592 K2#398 SOC#236 http://kevan.org/brain.cgi?DDTNM In some cultures what I do would be considered normal. -- Ineffective daily affirmation _______________________________________________ aprssig mailing list aprssig at tapr.org https://www.tapr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/aprssig _______________________________________________ aprssig mailing list aprssig at tapr.org https://www.tapr.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/aprssig -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
