You are welcome to join the project (http://www.aprs4r.org) and add native ax25 support.

A ticket (http://www.aprs4r.org/cgi-bin/trac.cgi/ticket/43) to add ax25
native support exists for nearly two years.

why it is a bad idea to use a modern programming environment with object orientation,
garbage collection, build in thread support and a lot of other features.

For the given mission (APRS gateway or digipeater) and the existing hardware (wireless ap with 16/32 MB RAM)
the ruby software is running fine, no performance problems.

In fact, in the past we had some serious problems with memory leaks. But all of these problems
came from an older version of the ruby interpreter, which is implemented in C ;-)
