[aprssig] Garmin mode initialization string?

I have a Garmin Street Pilot III that I would like to work with in
Garmin binary mode.  However, it seems to need some sort of
initialization data sent to the GPS in order to start outputting data.
 I would like to have something like a PICAXE do that rather than a
computer.  Can someone point me to some documentation on how to "wake
up" a Garmin GPS when in Garmin mode?  All I need to have it do is
spit out location/altitude/course/speed data at 1 second intervals - I
don't need access to waypoints or anything like that.
