There is a performance hit, but if you have sufficient RAM and follow
a typical usage pattern of using one app at a time (not constant
switching back and forth), most of the performance hit is at starting
the VM. The resulting system is reasonably usable. If you are short
on RAM running a VM can be painfully slow.
