If it's easy to get to, you could simulate rainfall by shorting the two wires together a few times. If it isn't the rain gauge or the cable and connector, then it would get a bit (lot) more complicated. I doubt if OS will supply a circuit diagram, so you would have to trace the connection to see what it connects to and then possibly get a data sheet for the device... or you could just buy an WS1 from Scott at Argent Data.
