I'm going to look into the new(er) ft350 or whatever I just seen in QST the last two months--this way I don't have to carry a spare aprs rig with me when on the road. Seems like your digi path is good. It is mostly gong to be an RF issue. The power supply while underway will help too. I used it extensively while under way the last two months on my motorcycle. It also kept the battery fully charged. I am currently using a little 1/4~ magmount for the aprs in my truck, that seems to work pretty good with the radio set at 1 watt while in town here.
