Bob, With all of these choices how is one supposed to pick the right one for their station and how is everyone else supposed to accurately interpret it? Adding "mobile or anything" to -1 thru -4 or "etc" to -10, -11, and -12 simply opens the door for confusion in my view. What use are the SSID's if they don't definitively identify the station type? In my view the more immediate need is to better define basic station types. Too frequently I see stations running -7 with an automobile symbol or -9 with a station or digi symbol. What difference does it make if a mobile is using a portable radio or a tracker or a TNC/computer/mobile radio combination, it's still a mobile. It's bad enough there are numerous stations (in the U.S.alone) not beaconing a callsign or SSID at all but now with this list it will be even harder to decipher someone's station type as it will depend entirely upon the owner's interpretation of this SSID list which I feel is no standard at all when you include options like "anything" or "etc". Please reconsider your approach to this. 73, Gary N6LRV -----Original Message----- From: aprssig-bounces at tapr.org [mailto:aprssig-bounces at tapr.org] On Behalf Of Robert Bruninga Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2010 7:39 AM To: 'TAPR APRS Mailing List' Subject: Re: [aprssig] SSID Standardization Based on feedback, I have revised the SSID suggestions to these: -0 Primary station usually fixed and message capable -1 Other station, or digipeater or mobile or anything -2 Other station, or digipeater or mobile or anything -3 Other station, or digipeater or mobile or anything -4 Other station, or digipeater or mobile or anything -5 From other networks (Dstar, Iphones, Blackberry's etc) -6 Special event, Satellite ops, camping or 6 meters, etc -7 walkie talkies, HT's or other human portable -8 boats, sailboats, RV'sor second main mobile -9 Primary Mobile of all types -10 internet, Igates, etc -11 balloons, aircraft, etc -12 APRStt, DTMF, RFID, one-way trackers, devices, etc -13 Weather stations -14 Truckers or full time drivers -15 General purpose for anything I added one-way trackers and other devices to -12, since that is a meaningful category of devices that are one way... I also freed up -15 for any other use.
