soundmodem under linux can be either userlevel emulating a kiss tnc or 
kernel based, in both cases they should work flawlessly with xastir.

soundmodem also works under windows and is theoreticly better but not 
many programs suport it, agwpe is suported by a lot more software, 
sometimes needing glue software.
