If you use an external GPS antenna, it will need to have an built-in preamp to offset the horrendous coax loss at 1575 MHz where GPS operates. If you are going to have an external unit anyway, you might as well avoid the coax loss and need for a preamp by using the faceless hockeypuck-type GPS devices. Units like the Garmin GPS-18, and the ones sold by Argent Data and Byonics, combine the antenna and entire GPS receiver into one unit -- 5 VDC in/serial GPS data out to a port on the radio. 2) Trim your email responses!!!
