I've done exactly this.

I cracked open a 5-volt-output lighter-plug assembly, extracted the PC board 
with regulator inside, wired it to a couple of feet of red/black zipcord with 
powerpoles, and wired a female 6-pin mini-DIN cable to the other end.    I then 
covered the whole thing with two layers of 1" diameter heatshrink tubing about 
6" long.
