But the alternative is to write a simple app on a touch screen (tablet, phone, ipod, or raspberry pi) that has a keypad for typing the runner name, when you type one in it talks over bluetooth or directly to a tnc that sends it as an APRS packet. Each choice is about the same in terms of programming effort, and a touchscreen is easier and more versatile.
