The effectiveness of data compression depends heavily on the content.  I'd 
rather leave that to the higher protocol layers.  Otherwise you're likely to 
make things worse if there's already compression going on.

My new design uses an ARM7 at about 50 MHz.  No problem there.  But my 
OpenTrackers are < 8 MHz, 8-bit devices with 192 bytes of RAM and under 8K 
of flash.  Not a lot of room for complicated encoding.
