As we look at network devices like layer 2 repeaters, we should also be looking the layer 2 "endpoints". For lack of a better term, these most closely resemble the functionality of network interface cards (NICs) found in today's Ethernet networks. As has been pointed out by others, simply implementing the layer 2 functionality built into AX.25 will only provide some limited benefits such as decreasing congestion and increasing usability of current networks. Where the big benefit will be found is when we can look at AX.25 not as end, but as simply a transport mechanism for higher layers. A large part of this will be in the definition of the layer 2/layer 3 interface and its implementation for different layer 3 protocols. If there needs to be specification updates, we hope that TAPR, the ARRL, and any other organization with a hand in this will step forward to work for a coherent, consistent update mechanism. I honestly believe, however, that most if not all of this will be defined by the implementations, not be changing the specification. 73, Pete Loveall AE5PL
