That didn't use CSMA at all. I think you meant the opposite, aka a CSMA circle? (the range of a station that can get a proper DCD on another similar station. Outside of this circle network performance drops to pure Aloha. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALOHA_network Remember, not everyone here is from APRS circles and understands their slang.
