[dsp] Evaluation Kits

I have come to TAPR looking for learning resources for DSP. I would like to do some experimenting since I enjoy hands-on learning rather than theory. TAPR info on evaluation kits seems to be out of date. Can anyone recommend a current EVK that combines low cost with good teaching materials. Is the TI C5535 eZdsp a good kit for this kind of learning?
