Pactor and it's variants are really the only viable HF data modes for our uses. They can achieve speeds of 2400bps and higher when they get going with their compression etc. Other "soundcard" modes such as PSK31 or RTTY are not fast enough to shift reasonable amounts of data such as is required by the packet bulletin boards. Sure we could use AMTOR (and many have/do) but it's still speed limited.
