Bet you breakfast you blew out the MAX232 ... connecting/disconnecting serial connection when powered up. The early Maxim parts were not ESD protected ...newer versions of the IC are. I find this problem is HALF of the TNCs/Modems that are reported Dead. The other Half have the serial connection directly connected to serial port on the CPU (replace CPU).
