Why not buy one of Byon's Microtrack products and change the firmware?

I asked Byon and he mentioned something like what I wanted was "int the works" but there's no release date. So, I'm just checking around as I need to get something up and running before winter ice and snow hits. I'd actually prefer Byon's products as I know they work well, but if there's something else more readily available I'd like to read up on that and compare the devices. :-)

I'm looking to put up several stations for public service and I'd like to know if there's already something existing or in the works that would tie together the formatting of the weather station data, creating and sending the APRS packet, and the integrated radio to transmit. I know such trackers exist that periodically send GPS data. So, has anyone successfully adapted one of those or created something new for the purpose I stated?
